Vibration

Many projects are affected by ground vibration particularly in cities where underground transport is prevalent. As such ground vibration assessments are often required as part of the planning process. Often undertaken at the same time as planning noise assessments, Pace Consult has a substantial depth of experience in this field.

The 'floating' of a building due to transport vibration sources such as Cross Rail is not a decision to be taken lightly and is both technically challenging as well as costly. Pace Consult is on hand to correctly specify and review treatment measures and to inspect the installation and survey its efficacy throughout construction.

Specialist vibration studies include the centre for Nanotechnology at Bristol University, Ophthalmic imaging suites and micro suites within hospitals and investigations of problematic vibration episodes arising from plant room operation.

Construction stage vibration affecting offsite receptors is another major field of deployment for Pace Consult with many projects receiving continuous monitoring from our fleet of remote communication noise and vibration units. These allow a signal to be sent to the construction team when a defined vibration (or noise) level is exceeded allowing the minimisation of impact. Detailed guidance is provided in a number of British Standards, BS 6472, BS 5228 and BS 7385.

Air Quality Assessments

Air Quality Assessments are a common requirement for planning applications across the UK. They are often required in locations, known as Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs), where concentrations of one or many air pollutants exceed the relevant UK Air Quality Standards. These AQMAs are regularly found in urban areas, next to major roads.

Air Quality Assessments are needed to ensure that new users of a development are not exposed to unacceptable air quality and to make sure that the development itself does not significantly worsen air quality, during both construction and operation. Where problems are identified, suitable mitigation to either reduce exposure to poor air quality (e.g. through recommending changes to the ventilation strategy) or minimise emissions, can be recommended.

Depending on the size and location of the scheme, air quality can be assessed in different ways. The simplest form of assessment combines freely available data with various criteria from best practice guidance to screen out significant impacts. Where these thresholds are exceeded, air quality can be predicted using detailed dispersion models or monitored using diffusion tubes or real-time automatic monitors/ sensors.

Pace Consult Ltd and its associates have the experience of providing robust and bespoke air quality assessments, designed to meet the specific requirements of local and national policy in the most cost-effective and efficient manner.

The full suite of Pace Consult’s air quality consultancy services include:
